Static and Dynamic Analysis of a Bistable Plate for Application in Morphing Structures

چکیده
The need for better aircraft performance is increasingly prompting designers towards the realisation of morphing or shape-adaptable structural systems. One way to achieve this is to employ multistable composites elements. In this paper a square, curved bistable plate is studied. The finite element analysis provides the load-deflection characteristic of the bistable plate. A cubic expression is then fitted to this curve, and the equation of motion of the plate is reduced to a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system which has the form of the Duffing equation for a double-well potential system. The dynamics of the plate are investigated using bifurcation diagrams and shows that the qualitative behaviour given by the measured response is predicted well by the simple SDOF model.

This paper analyzes the effects of structures and loads on the static bending and free vibration problems of bilayer beams. Based on static mechanical equilibrium and energy equilibrium, the static and dynamic governing equations of bilayer beam are established. It is found that the value of the thickness ratio has a significant effect on the static and dynamic responses of the beam, and the st...
متن کاملEffect of Through Stationary Edge and Center Cracks on Static Buckling Strength of Thin Plates under Uniform Axial Compression
Thin plate structures are more widely used in many engineering applications as one of the structural members. Generally, buckling strength of thin shell structures is the ultimate load carrying capacity of these structures. The presence of cracks in a thin shell structure can considerably affect its load carrying capacity. Hence, in this work, static buckling strength of a thin square plate wit...
